"The traditional construct of being a woman bares in its teeth the usability and purpose of her course- the role of a mother, above all else. My world, from a girl to woman, had always been structured and self-taught since the dimly age of 9, the unsettling truth behind my mother’s eyes- that I was born to give. Culturally, a Malay woman’s best role is to be a housewife. An easy, destructive, destructible object- an asset to patriarchy."
By accommodating my feelings through the form of performance arts and sculpture, the artist created a timepiece chair fabricated entirely from resin to closely resemble the interior of eggs representing her envisionment of womanhood in traditional Malay culture.Aimed to question the functionality of everyday objects, Maryam challenges the normal and materiality to construct a chair that represents herself. Accompanied by a 5-minute performance piece, the artist takes on the role of a bride, portraying sensitivity and the emotional setbacks as she sways with the chair in hand, as if it is an intimate part of her, before entrusting her unknown future to the beat of the kompang.
