Gadis Melayu(2024) tells the story of a proper Malay woman finding liberty through dancing. The short film starts off with her doing her makeup, an old Malay classic playing in the radio. As she stares at herself in the mirror, the begins to fade out, the music bleeding as she imagines herself dancing freely. As the film progresses the mood shifts, and slowly encapsulates the hardships Malay women went through while struggling to keep her womanhood and responsibilities afloat. In Gadis Melayu, Maryam uses her female voice to challenge the patriarchal views of a Malay woman by revealing the harsh reality of stay-at-home mothers during the 1900's.
